Bourtange
is a magnificent fortified town, near the border with Germany. During the Eighty Years'War the city of Groningen was captured by the Spaniards and the
fortress Bourtange arise. Het municipality Vlagtwedde let the fortress after the exodus from the village around 1960 rebuilt as it was in 1742.
Besides the reconstructed fortifications you will find numerous attractions. |

In the Veenkoloniaal Museum
in Veendam, one can meet a prehistoric man, peat diggers, boatmen and sailors. There are also straw- and cardboard workers whom show the wonderful world of
the potato starch production. For groups there are several arrangements. |

The Veenpark in
Borger-Compascum is a great wetland changed into a nostalgic recreation park of 160 acres.
Daily peat is being dugged with bare hands and old crafts are still to be seen. The tuff trains go still through the villages and
the natural peat. It is also possible to go with a tuff ship or with an old wagon.

The estate Fraeylemaborg is located on the main road in Slochteren.
The estate arose in the middle ages as a reinforced brick mansion with a wooden farmhouse. In the 17th century the two wings were built and in the 18th century
the current appearance arose with cornices and a monumental central section. In 1975, after a restoration, the Fraeylemaborg became open to the public.
